Clark and Hathaway families papers, 1834-1940.

Extensive correspondence, diaries, estate records, estate inventories, legal documents, financial records, and assorted prose written and collected by members of four New Haven and Haddam, Connecticut, families. Includes estate records and inventories of Sally and John Burr, and Daniel Clark. Clark's papers also contain records of his activities as collector of taxes in the 10th school district in Haddam. He and his wife Wealthy Ann Burr Clark had daughters Wealthy, Harriet and Ellen Martha who were teachers at Haddam, and were regular correspondents. James T. Hathaway's papers include minutes of the Rockland County Sacred Music Society, diaries, correspondence, essays and memoranda, samples of the printing his company produced, and Navy records. His wife Wealthy Ann Clark Hathaway is represented by correspondence and diaries. Their daughter Eugenia Hathaway married Frank Trusdell, a newspaper reporter most noted for his coverage of the assassination of President Garfield and for his eventual conviction for forgery. Their correspondence documents an interesting courtship followed by a long-distance marriage as he pursued his careers in the Navy aboard the U.S. Franklin, as a journalist and as a railroad commissioner in the northwest United States. Eugenia wrote copiously and also kept diaries.

James Garfield, twentieth President of the United States, was born in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, in 1831. After embarking on an academic career, he joined the Ohio volunteer infantry regiment, and in 1863 was appointed Major General in the same regiment. He served as a member of the U. S. House of Representatives from 1863 to 1880, when he was elected President.
